Highboards: Vintage, Mid-Century and Antique
A highboard is taller than a sideboard and shorter than a cabinet: the piece of furniture for dishes, glasses, books and everything you want to keep within reach yet stored away. At Hauptstadt Möblerei, you will find a changing selection of vintage highboards: mid-century highboard made of teak with a drinks cabinet and writing flap, the walnut highboard from the 1950s and 1960s, the Hellerau highboard from the GDR, the Art Deco highboard with high-gloss veneer and the antique Vertiko from the Gründerzeit period. All restored in our Berlin workshop.
Highboards by type
- mid-century highboard: teak, rosewood or walnut, sliding doors, often with a drinks cabinet, glass display case or writing flap. See Mid-Century.
- highboard with display case: glass at the top, closed storage below. Ideal for glasses and collectibles. Also see display cabinets.
- Vertiko and antique highboard: Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau, two doors, a drawer, and a raised top section.
- Art Deco highboard: rounded corners, burr veneer, chrome. See Art Deco.
Highboard, sideboard or lowboard?
A Lowboard is low and serves as a TV stand. A Sideboard is about hip-height. A highboard reaches chest height or higher and offers the most storage space on the same footprint, especially in small apartments.
Used highboards, restored

Frequently asked questions about highboards
What is a highboard best suited for?
For dining rooms and living rooms: dishes and glasses behind doors, cutlery in drawers, and bottles in the drinks cabinet.
How can I recognize a genuine mid-century highboard?
By solid-wood edges, dovetail joints, manufacturer's stamps on the back and continuous veneer grain across all doors.
Does a highboard fit in a small apartment?
Better than a sideboard, because it goes upward rather than outward.
How do I care for a teak highboard?
Treat it with a thin coat of teak oil about once a year, and do not place it in direct sunlight.
