English furniture: Chippendale, Regency, Chesterfield and Heldense
English furniture stands for mahogany, leather, brass, and a craft tradition that has changed little since the 18th century. At Hauptstadt Möblerei, you’ll find a changing selection of English-style furniture and originals: Chippendale display cabinets with leaded glass, Chesterfield sofas and -armchairs in leather, English desks with leather tops, Regency dining tables with double pedestals, bookcases, side tables and nesting tables, tea trolleys and wingback chairs. Including pieces by makers such as Bevan Funnell and Heldense, restored in our Berlin workshop.
English styles at a glance
- Chippendale: Mahogany, curved legs with claw feet, pierced chair backs, leaded glass. Our own collection: Chippendale.
- Regency (c. 1800–1830): More streamlined, with brass inlay, saber legs, and neoclassical motifs. Dining tables with pedestal bases, sofa tables, sideboards.
- Victorian and Edwardian (1837–1910): More ornate, with dark mahogany and walnut, inlay, wingback chairs, Chesterfield sofas.
- Chesterfield: Leather with deep button tufting and rolled arms. Available as sofas, armchairs, and dining chairs. See sofas and armchairs.
- 20th-century English-style furniture: Bevan Funnell (Reprodux), Heldense, and other workshops that continued the old designs to a high standard.

Why English furniture?
Mahogany is hard and stable, and grows darker and more beautiful with age. English furniture is built for everyday use, not for display. After 50 years, an English desk or Chesterfield sofa is usually in better condition than a new piece of furniture after five. Photos from all sides, dimensions, and a condition description are provided for every piece.

Frequently asked questions about English furniture
What is the difference between Chippendale and Regency?
Chippendale (from 1750) is curved and ornate, while Regency (from 1800) is streamlined and neoclassical. Both are made of mahogany, and both are in this collection.
Are these originals or reproductions?
Both. Originals from the 18th and 19th centuries and 20th-century period-style furniture, which we label as such. We name makers such as Bevan Funnell or Heldense when a piece is stamped.
How do I care for mahogany?
Dust with a dry cloth, polish occasionally with silicone-free polish, avoid direct sunlight and wet glasses.
Does English furniture suit a modern home?
Yes, as a statement piece: a Chesterfield in a white room, a mahogany desk in a modern home office.
